So, what is a jade roller and what can this little gem do for your skin? I’m always looking for new and cool ideas when it comes to skincare and although this item is certainly not a new concept, it’s coolness more than grabbed my attention. It’s also extremely pretty and luxurious looking and being a self-confessed sufferer of shiny object syndrome, I just simply had to have one.

I’ve recently become quite obsessed with dry brushing and it was while doing some research for this that I accidentally came across the jade roller and what a pleasant accidental discovery it was. It turns out that jade rolling has been practiced for centuries and with so many skin benefits from using it, I’m surprised my skincare obsessed radar didn’t pick up on it sooner.

Jade rolling is a very simple and easy process of rolling a specially made jade stone roller across the face in certain directions for a few minutes to help improve a variety of different skin issues. It has been around for many years and is believed to have been practiced by the wealthy women of ancient China since as far back as the seventh century.

Nowadays its popularity seems to be on the rise as more and more of us are looking for new and unusual ways to improve our skincare routines. The jade stone itself is actually considered to be a symbol of beauty and longevity and rolling this semi-precious stone in a particular fashion across the face is believed to have an array of skin benefiting properties.

Jade Rolling Benefits

These little rollers have so many skin benefits that it was almost impossible for me not to want one. To start with, much like dry brushing, they help to increase lymphatic drainage which helps to remove toxins from the body. They can also help with circulation which leaves the skin with a naturally glowing appearance.

The massaging motion of the roller is also said to help tighten and tone the facial muscles which can help the skin to look firmer. It can also help bring down overall skin puffiness which is one of my favourite things about it because that makes your facial features look so much more defined especially in certain areas like the cheekbones, brows, and jawline.

Those who suffer from dark circles or puffiness around the eyes have said that it worked wonders in improving the appearance of this problem. Because the jade stone remains cold regardless of the air temperature, this is what makes it very effective at relieving puffiness and this is just as true for the eye area as well as the rest of the face. In fact, many people actually keep their jade rollers in the fridge to keep them extra chilled to make them even more effective.

This same cooling effect is said to help calm the skin and bring down any redness and inflammation too. The rollers are also said to help improve uneven skin tone and brighten the complexion including the under eye area and as an added bonus, it helps stimulate collagen production and helps to improve skin elasticity.

If all of that wasn’t enough, the jade roller is also said to have a lifting effect on the skin, tighten enlarged pores, relieve facial tension and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. And last but not least it can help relieve headaches and help with sinus conditions and congestion. As I said in the beginning, I found it very hard not to want one.

How Does it Feel

Apart from the fact that it feels extremely relaxing and helps to relieve stress levels, there’s something very luxurious about rolling a semi-precious stone around your face. I know that might sound daft but it really is true, we all like to feel pampered once in awhile and that’s exactly the feeling you get when you use a jade roller.

There is no need to use any kind of pressure when rolling, gentle is the best approach and although most people should feel no discomfort, those who are new to facial massage may feel slight tenderness in their facial muscles after the first few uses but this is perfectly normal. It is also perfectly normal for the skin to look a little flush once you start rolling, this is just fluid starting to move beneath the skin surface.

How to Use the Jade Roller

It is extremely easy to use and the best part about it is that it only takes a few minutes to complete the whole session. Simply use upward and outward movements to roll the roller over the entire face and neck, rolling over each section around three times. For both the upper and lower eye area, roll outwards from the inside corner towards the ears and for the jawline, roll from under the center of the chin up along the jawline towards the ears on each side.

Many people also apply oils, serums or moisturisers before they begin rolling because it is said to help skin care products penetrate the skin better but as long as your skin is clean beforehand, the roller can be used on its own. This can be done on a daily basis if you wish and at any time of day which makes it super convenient and easy.

What and Where to Buy

There are a lot of jade rollers out there and they vary in price quite considerably. I bought mine from Amazon and chose a middle of the range one but there were a lot of choices that cost next to nothing. it’s worth noting though that a lot of the cheaper ones are not real jade so look for rollers that state they have been made with the real thing. Below is the one that I bought from Amazon.

Final Thoughts

So it’s official, the jade roller is probably one of the coolest and prettiest things I’ve bought so far and I’m seriously happy that I accidentally came across it. You don’t necessarily have to spend a large sum of money and buy the best quality jade out there (not unless you want to that is) but just be careful that you pick one that is real jade and not a fake jade substitute or even worse plastic. Either way, once you’ve found a good one, they really are an excellent addition to your skincare routine.

Oh and if you’re really into these types of products, I’ve found another really cool one that is now sharing the top spot with my jade roller and that my new 24k beauty bar which you can read all about here.

Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any experiences with jade rollers that you’d like to share as it’s always nice to hear other people’s thoughts and opinions.

I read your post with great interest since I’m always on the lookout for these sorts of products too. I tend to have uneven skin tone, so was excited the jade roller addressed this. Also, it seems like it would just be a very relaxing way to massage my face and neck and I like the idea of it cooling inflamed skin. Thanks for this great post. Bookmarking your site!

Oh this sounds absolutely fabulous! I am always on the lookout for skin care that doesn’t involve harsh chemicals and this sounds perfect. Is jade rolling just for the face, or does it benefit other areas of the body as well? How do you tell if it’s real jade and not just some jade coloured rock? Thanks!

      Hi Shirley

They really are the coolest little thing I’ve found so far and they look so pretty. They’re really a facial roller but if you’re looking for something for the body then you could try dry body brushing. As for telling the difference between real and fake jade, that can be quite tricky. There are a few tips here on the wikihow website that you can try once you’ve bought it but if you’re trying to figure out if what you’re buying is real before you actually purchase it then price would be the first thing you’d want to look at, if it’s really cheap then it probably isn’t real jade.
